• Direct Evidence of Black Holes from Hubble - The Hubble Space Telescope has detected telltale signs of matter being sucked into a black hole and disappearing behind the event horizon. The telescope observed pulses of ultraviolet light emitted by matter as it fell in. The light faded and disappeared, the predicted behavior for gas being sucked into a black hole beyond the event horizon, from which nothing can escape. Astronomers consider this observation the first direct evidence ever obtained of black holes. The Hubble Web site has a neat animation of the process
